Climate of Mauritius

The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 22°C in winter and 34°C in summer. The sea temperature varies between 22°C and 27°C. In the central part of the island, the maximum daytime temperature varies from about 19°C in August to about 26°C in February. The western and northern regions are warmer and relatively drier than the East and the South.

This makes Mauritius an all year round destination



The monetary unit is the Mauritian Rupee (Rs.) which is divided into 100 cents (cs). At the latest exchange rate, one Euro is worth around Rs. 30.

Take your best beach and casual wear. In the winter months (June -September), carry some light woolen clothing for the cool evenings.
Do show due respect when visiting religious places. Wear appropriate clothing at religious places. It is advisable to cover shoulder & knees for such visits. Do remove leather shoes and belts when entering the premises.

When is the best time to travel to Mauritius for beach weather?
Mauritius is fantastic all year round, but summer is from November until April and winter is from May until October. Summertime is perfect for the beach as you can expect day time temperatures of about 30° Celsius/ 86° Fahrenheit, accompanied by gentle sea breezes.
June, July and August are the coldest months to travel and during these months the sun sets earlier than in summer. Daytime temperatures during these months are between 20° and 25° C/ 68° F and 77° F and nights can be as cool as 15° - 17° C/ 59° F - 62° F.

How accessible is Mauritius?
There are twice daily flights to Mauritius from Johannesburg . One is on South African Airways and the other is on Air Mauritius. The flights take approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes.

Is there a special luggage restriction on the flights to Mauritius?
No. The luggage restriction is 20kg which is the standard weight restriction for most scheduled flights in Africa.

Do the hotels have a dress code?
During the day there is no dress code (a swimming costume and wrap is perfectly suitable) but at dinner most hotels and restaurants have a relatively smart dress code. Men need to wear collared shirts, closed shoes and long pants; women's dress code is more flexible but needs to be relatively smart, such as a summer dress and sandals, or trousers and a smart/ casual top.

Are there good honeymoon specials?
Most hotels in Mauritius offer excellent honeymoon specials to newly wed couples, provided that you travel within 1 year of getting married. These specials can include anything from high discounted rates to complimentary spa treatments and extra meals being included in the cost of your package.

How children friendly are the hotels and what children's facilities are available?
Virtually all the hotels are incredibly child friendly and most have a children's centre where there is full time supervision and a wealth of fantastic activities for kids, so that you can relax in the knowledge that your children are having fun and being taken care of.

What age must children be to attend the children's clubs?
Most children's clubs accept kids between the age of 3 and 11 without supervision. Children under 3 years of age may attend provided that they are supervised by a nanny or parent.

Are there baby sitting facilities or nannies available at the hotel?
Most hotels offer baby sitting services and nannies for an additional charge.

What is normally included at the hotel in the price we will pay? This differs from hotel to hotel, but the standard inclusions at most hotels are breakfast, dinner, all non-motorized water sports and unlimited waterskiing for the duration of your stay. Some hotels do also offer a fully inclusive price option for a slightly higher price which then includes lunch and drinks as well.

What currency and kind of money will I need in Mauritius?
The local currency is Mauritian Rupees. All of the resorts will exchange cash or travelers cheques at a very good rate for you. Credit cards are equally welcome and competitive commissions are charged. Euros are recommended.

How can I make certain my valuables will be safe?
All hotels will have a safe where you can store your valuables, if not in your room then at reception.

What is the standard tipping procedure?
Tipping at your hotel is entirely at your discretion and is not mandatory. However, it is customary to tip 10% of your billed amount.
You can either tip individual staff members whose service you appreciated and whose names you remembered by leaving money in an envelope for them at reception, or otherwise you can just leave a general tip at reception at the end of your stay which will be shared equally among the staff.
